Queen’s Speech: “the-one-in-five”

ben-bradshaw-mp_0003The surprise announcement in the Queen’s Speech that the Government intends special help in getting 16-24 year olds into work is welcome indeed. The even more surprising news of help for this group in becoming self-employed is especially welcome. As we noted after the publication of November unemployment figures these are the young people that urgently need support if we are not to create a new lost generation. Unemployment figures: “the one in five”

job_centre_plus2Some commentators are finding comfort in the fact that the latest unemployment figures did not break through the 2.5 million barrier. Others that the levelling out of the number of those seeking work hints at recovery in the economy.  Lord Mandelson managed to find cheer in the fact that unemployment among the young had not yet reached a million. It was only 943,000.

A more imaginative approach to dealing with unemployment is needed urgently says the pressure group New Deal of the Mind (NDotM) today. Unemployment figures out tomorrow are expected to show a continuing rise in the number of people out of work, with summer school leavers and graduates adding to the 2.5 million recorded last month.
